The Monestry

The green doors and windows of the houses contrast with the sober stone of which they are made.  Green too are the tiles that cover the beltower of the Carthusian Monastery, perhaps the most emblematic monument of this town.  This ancient monastery, which used to be the resident of Jaime II, housed Carthusian priests between 1399 and 1835.  Its important historic legacy, as well as mementoes from two remarkable visitors;  Frederic Chopin and George Sand, are preserved in cloisters, cells, gardens and museums.

Valldemossa Monastery

The Valldemossa monastery has attracted throughout its history illustrious people from all over the world - amongst these excel Chopin and his companion, George Sand - and is one of the principal attractions of the municipality and one of the preferred visits by tourists who come to the island.  the origin of the buildings date from the times of King James II of Mallorca, who chose this exceptional place in the Tramuntana mountain range, situated over 400 metres high, to build a palace for his son Sanc, known as the Palau del rei Sanc.  In 1399 King Martin el Humano ceded all the royal possessions in Valldemossa to the Carthusian monks.  These founded the monastery and lived there until 1835, when it passed into private hands, divided between nine owners.

The visit to the buildings starts in the church, a neoclassic building decorated by great artists and artisans of the era.  After the church we find the Cloister - one of the oldest parts of the current buildings - and from there to the ancient monks' pharmacy.  Then the garden can be visited and Prior's Cell - chapel, library, audience room, bedroom - where the historic and artistic legacy of the monks is preserved, showing how the monks lived.  In cells 2 and 4 there are documents and mementoes of Chopin and George Sand's stay in Valldemossa between 1838 and 1839.

The visit continues in the Municipal Museum, which holds a section dedicated to the antique Guasp Printing House, the Archduke Ludwig Salvatore room, the art gallery "La Sierra de Tramuntana" and a collection of contemporary paintintgs.

Crossing the Monastery Square and passing the artist Coll Bardolet's studio, we find the King Sanc, Palace, a luxurious mansion that preserves elements of the ancient monastery, such as the staircase, the cloister and the defence tower.  The building has also been occupied by famous people such as Jovellanos, confined in Valldemossa for political reasons, Ruben Dario, Unamuno, Azorin and Santiago Rusinol, amonst others.  At present the music room of the Palace holds folklore performances by "El Parado de Valldemossa" and piano concerts performed by outstanding pianists.

A walk through the concentric paths of the Monastery Gardens, surrounded by yews and other trees, is the perfect ending for the visit.

Amongst the cultural activities that take place in the Cartoixa, one of the most important is the Chopin Festival, that has been held for over twenty years.

The Municipal Museum

The old pharmacy and the church are the most outstanding buildings in this religious compound, whose vaults exhibit frescoes by Miguel Bayeu, Goya's brother in law.  The Municipal Museum is also part of this compound.  An old press belonging to the Guasps and 1,450 xylographic plates are part of the museum's collection.  Also worthy of note is the documentation compiled by Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria (19th-20th century) about the island and a gallery devoted to Sierra Tramuntana.  There is a room devoted to contemporary art, with works by Miro, Picasso and Tapies, among other famous artists.

In addition to the belltower of the Carthusian monastery, another tower rises above the rooftops in this Majorcan town;  the parish church of San Bartolome, from the 13th century.  The gallery that crosses this church, however, was built much later.

The Port of Valldemossa
On the slope of the mountain where Valldemossa is located, a small hermitage awaits.  From this small community, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the village.  Continue to the Port of Valldemossa to admire the Mediterranean Sea.  Pine woods and cliffs make up the coastal outline of the area, where coves and beaches are washed by pristine waters.  Son Marroig, in Na Foradada point, is a great example.  A paradise for those seeking peace and quiet in a natural environment.

At Valldemossa, the traveller can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Sierra Tramuntana, or go to the nearby towns of Deia, Soller, Banyalbufar, Santa Maria, del Cami and Palma.  Olive and almond trees grow among the ancient, Majorcan stone houses.  The archaeological site of Deia spreads along the side of a small hill that overlooks the Mediterranean.  On the other hand, Soller has beautiful stately mansions and palatial residences among fields of orange trees.  An ancient train will take you to the Port of Soller, a perfect place to be delighted by Majorcan dishes made with fresh fish and seafood.
